"Pfft," he said. "Just ? picking one up and ?ing the other down. We'll be there in a ?f hours,??."

So we walked. And something wa?shin? along, and the coun?ide was strangely beautiful. These inten? green, wind?t hills under thunde?????, sometimes ?e little val? filled with flo?, shops and ?es going????ing speed.

Gary is this big, ??hite-tra?chmendrik who lives acro??treet with his equal?hite-trash family. They ?e IROC-Zs wi??ic-b?ws, smoke like chimneys, and?? Quizno'? McDonald's. None of the?e th??est ?le on Earth, really.

Whic???????o return hom?om a?y interesting comic book shop last n??? mom and?cover several small fire?rning in my front yard, ?umab??esult of embers thrown off by a ? of fire??y ha?g in? fro?ard, illegally, right ne?o the road, and ?he middle of a drought. Literall?ery ?ing thing wa?? as tinder, and ????? />
My mom parked h?ruck on the front yard at the top of the slope, ? the?se, and ?mped? and grabbed the?den hose?ing ???t thaller fires. Then I ?d a louder crackling, and di?ered that the garage of the ?e next door had a raging conflagration boiling o??cree?hat covered the ?ance to the garage, and the same? the?e for the house ?he o? side of that one.

"J?!" I yelled, and ran over wi?he neighbor's garden??rying to?? the??rning next door. No water came out, and I ran back around to the side of that house, to the fauc?o which the hose??ached, a??ed it. I?? grip be?e the handle? different, ??ounded metal?aight bar. Finally, I loosed it and the ?shed?, so?an back ?he garage an?ent a few minutes dousing the fire.
Finally, ?as out, and ?rned my attention to the?se next ?hat one, and?eeze??mb over the hose's nozzl?urning it into a???ray ?? the blaze o??isingly easily. I kn?hat ?hould ha?aken?e ef? to ?e the fire, but didn??ion it.
Turning back ?he house?t to mine, I?iced that there was ??o-no?e damage?t something was still giving off smoke. Moving closer to the?age-???, I noticed the washer and d? aga? the left-ha?all ?he garage, a?aw a han??ding? from underneath them. It was bathed in blue-and-orange flames, shaking ?e a bit, and I knew righ??hat ?as Pete, my ?-door neighb?ho I've ?n since ?ere ?. He needed ?? />
I moved around the ??eeking in wi?s, a?he house? full of people,?tying. Of course?? Jul?h, and e?one was cele?ing and had totally forgotten about Pete, who wa?rning to death in the garage? />
The?t of the?ner of m?e, I?iced that a ?le of small fires had reignited in my yard, ??o douse them. In the meantime, Gary had dug a firepit in??tyle="fo?tyle?alic;">m?pan>?d and lit a fire? />
"Wh?e you in my yard?" I asked disda?lly.

?hrugged.??he F?h. It has to be cele??ith fire!"

"Not i??d! Get back acro??treet." And I doused the??. He rolled his ? at ??-middle-?s effemi? and went back a?s th??. In the meantime, a huge fire h?prun? in woods behind my ??here the? neighbors now live), and I had ?ut i?t. T?robl??hat ?as completel?eathed in smoke, and my ? hints as to whe?he fire ?????lit-second g?ses of little tongues of flame flickerin?t through the smoke.

?ook ?e a ?ggle?t I finally put it o?ith my garden hose, and ?rned to the front of the?se, ?e I saw ? arguing?h a cop who was ?ing him up for f?antly illegal confla?ion.??tyle="fo?tyle?alic;">Serves him right, I thought, a?oke up at 5:45 a.m. ??ning.

So I've been dreaming a lot lately.

I mean, a lo?pan>. I've been waki???ange?rs of the night after deep, ?eshi??s, a?emembering a?his strange stuff. U?tuna?, I forget most of i??ning? />
Still, the stuff I reme? is strangel?ovoc?e. Lunch?ith old friends who have?sual cell ph?, halfway sawing off half of the teeth o??er jaw on the right side?nning through moonli?airies, and ? night, I sailed around the Cape of Good?e on an old-fashioned three-?er.
In fact, ???? of ? of ??tle I can remember, involving some kind ?eird tim?avel. I mean, the Cape of Good Hope thing felt like ???ime ?he 17th ?ury--1642 to be precise.

? all been long, detailed, plot-drive?? that vanish?h the morning, and change like TV channels e? time I wake up and fall bac??? />
I'll ha?o keep a?er journal next ?he bed.
